As a student (soon to be alumnus) at Brigham Young University, I feel obligated to speak to the current issues in the news surrounding rape victims and enforcement of BYU’s Honor Code. I admit to not knowing all the facts, but think that there are some clear, Christ-like changes that can be implemented for the individuals involved and the university community at large.
It strikes me that whether or not the victims of rape and sexual assault have violated some portion of the Honor Code in the circumstances surrounding the incident, whatever is done administratively should not result in victims of rape and sexual assault being silenced. I recognize the desire from BYU to uphold the Honor Code, but believe that this particular approach does far more harm to the university community than good.
Granting immunity from Honor Code Office investigations to students that have survived rape and other sexual assault is the charitable, sympathetic, generous and above all, Christ-like thing to do. Rape and sexual assault are far more grievous sins than the vast majority of possible Honor Code violations. They should be addressed first and in such a way as to protect the victims in a time of great need.
